Video
[2022]

Somewhere between a video essay and a supercut of archival clips, old photographs, and my own footage, this film briefly recalls and sorts through the memories left by my grandmother and occasionally attempts to explore storytelling in and of itself. By utilizing the narrative, structural and graphic possibilities of the split-screen format, the story presented in this film is shaped, expanded, and complicated by way of associative editing and formal visual rhyming. The dialogue between the two screens is underpinned by narrations by myself and my father, answering and often times contradicting each other.

The film is inspired by the many myths, lores, and legends my grandmother would use to tell me when I young. Sugar Glass contains fragments of these stories. Although, it does not attempt to complete, but only to form one of the many shards of a constellation. With tenderness and longing, I hope to present not just a portrait of my grandmother, but also our own memories and stories — remembered, reconstructed, and retold.
